Spread your wings and fly

We began our second day in Mexico aiding and interacting with the kids and their mothers at the shelter of Madres Asuntas. We first spoke with the nun, Madre Adelia Contini, who ran the shelter. She described aspects of the immigration crisis, specifically the MPP. The fact that there were several reasons people come to cross the border region surprised us. We interviewed the mothers on their journey and struggle to the shelter, as well as playing with the kids. For lunch, we ate mole and met with the representatives of Ollin Calli. They spoke on the conflict with maquilas. We learned how there is little to no compensation for the workers. We learned that the conditions are extremely poor in the factories. We learned how much worse the work is for women, and we learned so much more. After this intense and enlightening meeting, we decompressed by visiting El Mercado de Miguel Hidalgo, where we roamed freely to experience the Mexican culture in the marketplace. Later we went to the Cultural Center of Tijuana, which stored artifacts of the past. Leaving the Museum, we got caught in the middle of a dance session and joined in! We then visited the beach where the border divides Mexico and the U.S. For dinner we had delicious and authentic tacos. The day was fantastic.
