Heading Out!

On our first full day on our journey to Mexico, we began our day out by eating breakfast and sitting down for a debrief of the day that lied ahead. We checked out of the first house and then hopped on a bus headed for Chicano Park in Logan Barrio. We saw many beautiful murals, with deep cultural significance, each telling a story of Chicano culture. We were meant to meet the border patrol but they never showed up. Instead, we traveled (walked through a muddy road) down a portion of the 2-mile trek that American families must take if they want to see their loved ones on the Mexico border. We then headed to the mall to eat, and have our last bit of freedom. After a short ride, we arrived at the port of San Ysidro to walk across into a foreign land. After a quick stop, we headed over to visit with the deported veterans of America. There we heard remarkable stories of service ad patriotism coupled with betrayal and separation. After hearing the stories of some of the most forgotten victims of the immigration crisis we were invited to join them on their mission by spreading their message back home. Finally, we took a ride along the US-Mexico border to the lovely home of GaryMar. Our great hosts provided food and fun for the evening over the backdrop of an amazing sunset that was the perfect end to a perfect day.
